Chart of Interdependencies is fundamental to Maria Montessori’s conception of the Cosmos.
Maria Montessori’s Cosmic View
- Represents a systems theory approach to the interdependence of nature, humanity, and “supranature.” (Supranature represents the environment man has built on top of nature)
- It represents the nteractive processes that maintain balance and harmony.
The Chart of Interdependencies
- Purpose:
- A didactic material designed for Montessori guides.
- What does didactic material mean? A teaching tool or resource designed to educate, instruct, or convey specific knowledge or concepts.
- Functions as a story map to explain Maria Montessori’s understanding of interdependent relationships.

Key Components of the Chart
Nature
- Representation:
- Top of the chart: abiotic elements (Sun, land, water, air) and biotic elements (plants and animals).
- Relationships:
- All components are interrelated and interdependent, functioning according to their own natural laws.
- Role:
- Each component maintains harmony within the natural system.
Humanity
- Representation:
- Bottom of the chart: human groups from diverse cultural backgrounds, including children.
- Relationships:
- Humans are interrelated and interdependent but lack a predetermined role in the system.
- Role:
- Humans have the responsibility to choose actions that maintain (or disrupt) harmony.
Supranature
- Representation:
- A silver circle at the center of the chart, symbolizing the environment humans build to satisfy material and spiritual needs.
- Connections:
- Links the natural world and human world, emphasizing balance and responsibility.
- Imagery:
- A circular silver ball bearing, symbolizing the coupling of nature and humanity.
Concepts of Independence and Interdependence
- Cosmic Interdependency:
- Humans, nature, and the universe are interconnected agents maintaining universal homeostasis.
- Cosmic Task:
- Every agent, living or non-living, contributes to system balance by fulfilling its specific task.
- Children’s Role: Self-construction, integral to the cosmic task.
- Interesting and important that she included children. They’re fundamental to the world (not an afterthought)
Fundamental Needs
Definition of a Need
- An urgent requirement necessary for life.
- Needs must be met for survival, but organisms satisfy these needs differently.
Comparing plants, animals and humans

- Plants: Rely on tropisms to satisfy their needs; responses are automatic and limited to their biological programming.
- Animals: Depend on instincts for survival and reproduction; they follow inherent patterns and cannot deviate.
- Humans: Possess material and spiritual needs. Unlike plants and animals, humans adapt and modify their environment to meet these needs through intellect and creativity.

Creative Adaptation
Key Concepts
- Adaptation:
- Mutual exchange between organisms and their environment.
- Organisms fulfill their needs while contributing to environmental harmony.
- Telluric Economy: The system of life working together to form and maintain the environment. (didn’t know but Tellus means earth)
- Equilibrium:
- A balanced system is essential for adaptation.
- Humans, as stewards, must support planetary and spiritual equilibrium.
- Plant and Animal Adaptation:
- Plants and animals are pre-adapted to their environments via heredity and instinct. (table above)
- Their behavior is fixed, limiting flexibility.
- Human Adaptation:
- Humans are not pre-adapted to specific environments.
- They modify nature and create physical (e.g., tools) and non-physical (e.g., language, culture) systems to adapt anywhere.
- Humans have freedom and responsibility for adaptation.

Human Tendencies
- Definition:
- Internal energies aiding adaptation.
- LIke a toolkit of energies that humans can call on
- Role:
- Manifest through different developmental stages.
- Support children’s healthy growth in prepared environments.
Montessori’s Vision
- Humans, unique in their adaptability, must balance environmental stewardship with personal and societal growth through creative adaptation.
