List of college & university closures

·

As we look for a home for The School of Entrepreneuring, one area we’re analyzing is universities and colleges that are closing or ideally which may be on the precipice of closing.

Per the Hechinger Report, colleges and universities are closing at the rate of 1 per week right now which is an acceleration from the 2 per month seen in 2023 per SHEEO (State Higher Education Executive Officers Association)

If you know of any statistics or sources that may be useful to identify struggling universities and colleges based on enrollment stats, poor financial metrics, etc, please leave a comment or reach out to me at anands(at)gmail.

The below is definitely not comprehensive (scroll to see all the columns).

I have another 35 or so identified closures or planned closures but just haven’t had the time to add all of them here. I will continue to update and share via my newsletter which you can sign up for below.

  3. Hello Anand!

I am just wondering where you source these closures? Is it just through news or elsewhere?

    Thanks!

    1. Via news.

  4. Hi Anand,

Upon a super cursory review, I’ve noticed some errors in your list.

    Some (non-exhaustive) examples:

    – King’s College closed as a result of losing accreditation and, according to their own website, are trying to figure out a path forward.

    – Pacific Lutheran University, while financially struggling, is not closed.

    – Likewise, Claremont School of Theology is not closing.

In general, it might be helpful to put references to statements regarding closing/closure as a column in your database.

    1. Good suggestions and thanks. Will look into those and update.

      Appreciate it.

  5. […] If colleges just focused on attracting the wealthy, we’d see 40-50% of schools shutter due to low enrollment – a trend that has already started. […]
